There are a few executives at my organization, and on more than one occasion they've sent out emails with some poor spelling... and, the developers have some of the worst spelling I've come across. I'm product testing today and I noticed on the shipping pages they kept using "reciever" or "recieve" - Now. Receive happens to be one of the words that I will type incorrectly, but I always check it and ever since grade school the little rhyme: "I before E, except after C and sometimes Y" stays with me. I don't know when I learned it... but I don't think I'll ever forget it.
I sent an email to the developer with that little rhyme and circled the misspellings. We'll just have to see if he responds. He's also the one who uses "availible". Every time I see it - I twitch a little. Is it really that hard to spell check?

I've a peeve about spelling. Not the 'typing too fast to notice' kind, but that 'availible' thing would drive me MAD.
I know a different version of that rhyme: i before e except after c, or when sounded as 'ay' like in neighbour and weigh.
Here's another that stuck with me:

I'm a good speller, but I type too fast and sometimes screw things up. Ergo, I have my email program automatically run spell check before it sends email. It drives me batty to receive so called "professional" correspondence with misspellings throughout. Plus I'm one of those people who goes crazy when I see typos in menus or on signs/posters, etc. I've worked in an ad agency and I *know* how many people had to look at that thing before it went out, so how on Earth is it screwed up? Aargh!

I use the "I before E" rhyme if I forget. "I before E except after C and words that end with the sound of a like weigh or neigh." And I didn't learn that in school. The first time I actually remembered the rhyme as a kid was while watching a cartoon. :)

That "availible" bit has me twitching, too.
I'd like to think that I can spell well. Most of my mistakes tend to be caused by typing too fast or my fingernails hitting the wrong keys (they do that when they get particularly long), but I'm pretty good at looking at a word and seeing that something isn't right. There is no end to my self-irritation everytime my fingers go "teh" instead of "the."
I get thrown off by some of the UK versions of words as well, like recognise versus recognize. The American Z substitution. I end up taking twice as long when writing emails because I go over them a second or third time looking for mistakes.
Yeah... that whole "i before e" thing drives me crazy because it's not always true.
To me... spelling is an artform instead of a science.
I figure if I'm not 100% sure of how to spell something... then I should go as "creative" as I can on spelling.
That way people either think I'm eccentric, funny, weird or highly creative.
I've also found that if I'm in front of a group writing on a flip chart and I forget how to spell a word... my writing either gets really messy... trails off or I abreviate.
Yup... they're strategies I willingly share with other bad spellers.

Individuals who don't use spellcheck is my pet peeve also. There is a tab for 'grammar' in almost every writing document. Obviously, many people don't understand these tabs exist.

i am Dyslexic (just so you know i had to write that in word first and check i could spell it)and find spelling really hard. plus when i read things back i see what i want rather than what is there. i hate spelling, my mother and sister are exceptional spellers and always remark on my spelling and gramar which make me feel very inadequate. i try but i just dont seem to get it. my mum always told me the more you read the better your spelling will become, this is not true i love reading which does increase my vocabulary but my spelling remains rubbish. :(
These are some great answers! Well, I know that when I type fast sometimes the brain works faster than the fingers and in a blog post you don't always read over it or spell check it before you post. So I tend to not be quite as picky about blog posts... but words on products, packaging, promotional goods or teaching items really should be checked for accuracy :)
I will also use abbreviations... or I'll use the thesaurus in my brain when I'm making a presentation and suddenly have a brain fart on how something is spelled :)

I've found no mention of the Y portion of the "I-E" rule anywhere online. However, the vowel rule is as follows: "The vowels are A, E, I, O, U and sometimes Y" A vowel is defined as being any letter that when pronounced does not cause a build up of air pressure behind the glottis. In the word Nancy, Y is a vowel. In the word Yield, Y is a consonant. The Y rule does not apply to the "I-E" rule.

I guess I'll never understand this grammar/spelling obsession. I know how to spell, I just don't care. Some social media sites only give you so much space. I'm from Texas and I talk like most people would expect. I have a drawl and I pretty much spell like I talk. I say y'all ain't and fixin to. When I type I'll knock off the g on some words. Spelling becomes spellin, nothing becomes nothin. So what? Does that mean I'm stupid? No. It means I worry about things that matter such as kindness, understanding & compassion. I constantly get attacked because of grammar. If it makes people feel superior then those people have priority issues. You are not better than someone else just because "ur spellins better or u tawk purty." With all the division in the world today we ALL need to put our petty little differences aside and try to help one another not destroy.
